OTTAWA – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau today announced that he resigned as Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, effective immediately.

Trudeau apologized for what the opposition parties have been accusing his government and PMO of –political interference in the SNC-Lavalin case.

Even though he did not offer any further explanation, it is suspected that Trudeau’s sudden resignation was prompted by the release of a trove of important information submitted by former Attorney General Jody Wilson-Raybould to the Justice Committee. Those revelations included a bombshell audio recording made by Wilson-Raybould of a Dec. 19 phone call between herself and Michael Wernick, the outgoing Clerk of the Privy Council.

In announcing his resignation, Trudeau finally gave in to Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer’s repeated calls for the Prime Minister to admit his and his advisors’ wrongdoing and step down.

Trudeau will remain as Prime Minister until the Liberal caucus selects a new leader in their meeting later this week.

It is speculated that, in order to ensure the Liberals’ chances in the October elections, Trudeau may even support either Wilson-Raybould or former Treasury Board president Jane Philpott to be the new Liberal leader.

These two outspoken MPs and former ministers have risked being kicked out of the Liberal caucus for their criticism of the government’s handling of the SNC-Lavalin scandal, and their resulting resignations from Trudeau’s cabinet.
