Advocates make plea to for whereabouts of missing Chinese human rights defender
At a news conference on Parliament Hill on November 17, 2022, Katharine Dong, daughter of disappeared Chinese human rights defender Dong Guangping, makes a plea to the Chinese and Vietnamese governments to confirm his whereabouts and allow him to be reunited with his family in Canada. Dong, who has been detained by Chinese authorities three times in the past, has not been heard from since was arrested in Vietnam on August 24, 2022 and his family fears he has been handed over for detention yet again by Chinese authorities. Dong was accepted by Canada as a refugee but the federal government was unable to convince Vietnamese officials to allow him to leave that country and return to Canada. Katherine Dong is joined at this press conference by Winnie Ng (chair, Toronto Association for Democracy in China), Alex Neve (senior fellow, Graduate School of Public and International Affairs, University of Ottawa) and Jiaji Jiang (board member, Federation for a Democratic China).
